The institutions recently reached the agreement which culminated in the signing of Memorandum of Understanding on PhD programmes.
The Dean, Islamic Business School, UUM, Associate Prof. Asmadi Naim, stated this in Sintok while welcoming the students.
Asmadi noted that the first intakes of students on the PhD symposium would meet their supervisors and make use of the university facilities.
According to him, the programme will cater for students who cannot leave their duty post for one semester and lecturers whose school management cannot release them for a long period due to shortage of manpower.
“There is no difference between their programme and the one being run at UUM. They are our students. Similar programme is run in other countries like Indonesia and Bahrain.”
He assured other students at UUM that the programme will have no negative effect on their certificate, adding that efforts are being made to restructure the programme to serve the interest of all parties.
However, students under the programme have started presenting their initial research ideas to the reviewers at the symposium which started on Sunday. They are expected to return to Nigeria to continue with their research and return later to Malaysia for their thesis defense.
He urged Nigerian students in Malaysia to shun vices and fulfill immigration requirements. He also urged them to make best use of facilities provided by the Malaysian government which is ready to assist Nigeria in developing its manpower.
Some of the students who spoke on the programme commended UUM for signing the agreement with a Nigerian university, noting that the partnership would assist them in realising their dream of becoming a PhD holder while still discharging their duty in their places of work.
