The Vice Chancellor, Bayero University Kano, Professor Muhammad Yahuza Bello has disclosed that the university spends between thirty to thirty-five million naira (N30m-N35m) every month in financing its staff to attend capacity building conferences and workshops both within and outside the country.

He stated this on Tuesday in an opening address at a one-day capacity building workshop organized by the Librarians’ Registration Council of Nigeria which took place at the ICT centre of the university.

The workshop, with a theme “Preservation of eResources: Models and Modalities” was meant to train librarians drawn from different parts of the country on preservation of digital materials.

Represented by the Deputy Vice Chancellor Administration, Professor Haruna Wakili, the VC described the workshop as a welcomed development which was in conformity with the university’s staff capacity scheme.

He promised the university’s readiness to support any similar workshop provided it would add value to the capacity of the staff to deliver quality services.

“We spend not less than N30m to N35m every month in trying to support our staff to attend conferences because these conferences and workshops will make them better researchers, better teachers and better university workers” he said.

The Registrar, Librarians’ Registration Council of Nigeria, Professor Michael Afolabi emphasized the need for libraries to go digital especially in the face of recurring security challenges across the country, identifying experiences in Alexandria, Egypt and Mali as enough lessons for the country to take proactive measures and preserve its library resources.

He also pleaded for the development of disaster plan to guard library materials across the country against flood, earthquake or fire accidents saying “Libraries hold sensitive history and important documentation, hence the need for a plan that is not only proactive but preventive.”
