During graduation, students celebrate to show their gratitude to God for enabling them to come to the end of their academic stress.
Looking at the issues that affect the education system in the country such as strike, cultism and demonstrations, notably caused by inadequate facilities like water, electricity, congested hostel etc, and one can’t help but celebrate after passing through all these.
Every school has its own way of celebrating its graduation, depending on its culture and religion. The tradition of wearing native attires and branded T-shirts with parties to celebrate has been in place in many Nigerian universities.
Before now, BUK with majority of its populace being Muslims is always depicting the religious and socio-cultural identity of Kano State.
Graduation ceremonies in BUK involve recitation of Holy Qur’an in congregation in every department; organising Walima and pictures taken, contacts shared to avoid lost of contact after school.
In addition, contribution for capital project are being made to improve school facilities and help the new students to have access to the materials that graduating students are not privileged to use while in school and also highlight to the next set of students the importance of sacrifices.
But now, BUK students have adopted a new way of celebrating graduation which is completely different from what they are known for.
Celebration of graduation now starts a month before actual day. All students associations and departments come to display their culture and awards given to the highest bidder.
While exams are approaching, students get busy organising events and forgetting their primary assignment. They contribute huge sum of money for T-shirt, dinner, party and a host of other social events. On the day of their last paper, friends from other departments come in large numbers to splash pure water on the students that are rounding up their exams on that day, irrespective of age, sex and social status.
