Management of the university has fixed January 1 as reopening date for the institution after the five months’ strike by the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU).
Yahaya Shehu Muhammad, a 400 level student of Political Science, said he was excited with the development. He said: “What ASUU did was a sacrifice for students coming into the university in the near future.
“What is happening in the education sector was caused by the unpatriotic nature of our leaders; they are insensitive to our plights and that is why they allowed the strike to go on for almost six months. Lecturers should therefore inculcate the spirit of patriotism in their students so that they can act differently when they find themselves in government,” he said.
Another student, Bello Sagir said, “I feel extremely happy. In fact I cannot describe my happiness because the strike was one of my bad experiences in life,” he said.
He added that the strike had impacted negatively, noting that “the strike had paved ways for some students to go into taking drugs, becomes idlers and party goers.”
Fatima Alhassan Aliyu, a 400 level student of Law said, “I’m delighted that we are now coming back to face our studies. We have been sleeping with a burden on our heads which was quite disturbing.”
Najibullah Abdallah Nuhu, a Political Science student urged the federal government to honour the agreement reached with ASUU to avoid strike in the future.
