Prices of farm produce have dropped by about 50 per cent following bumper harvest in Taraba State.
Daily Trust’s finding revealed that farmers in the state have recorded bumper harvest and have flooded markets with farm produce.
Crops harvested include rice, maize, yam, cassava, Irish potato, early maturing beans and groundnut which are being sold at cheap prices.
The bumper harvest, it was further gathered, has forced down prices of foodstuff across the state.
For example, a 100kg bag of maize that was sold at N9,000 before the harvest is now sold at between N3,500 to N4,000 while a 100kg bag of paddy rice which sold at N8000 now sold at N5000.
Similarly, a medium size yam tuber that sold at N400 now cost N200 and a 100kg of local rice variety sold at N30,000 now cost between N22,000 to N24,000 respectively.
Findings further revealed that Iware, Mutumbiyu, Tella, Maihula and Garba-Chede markets were flooded with assorted farm produce and buyers from neighbouring states were making bulk purchases.
