The Vice-Chancellor of Yobe State University (YSU), Professor Muhammad Bashir Tahir, has commended Governor Mai Mala Buni for approving the full implementation of the 2025 Federal Government/Academic Staff Union of Universities (FGN/ASUU) Agreement, saying the decision will strengthen higher education and improve the welfare of academic staff in the state.
The vice-chancellor, in a statement issued on Monday by the Office of the Vice-Chancellor, described the approval, including the payment of all outstanding arrears to academic staff, as a landmark decision that reflects the governor’s commitment to education.
He said the implementation of the agreement would boost the morale of lecturers, enhance teaching, research and innovation, and improve productivity across state-owned tertiary institutions.
“The approval of the full implementation of the FGN/ASUU Agreement, along with the payment of all outstanding arrears, is a clear demonstration of Governor Mai Mala Buni’s visionary leadership and genuine commitment to the growth of higher education,” Tahir said.
He said the decision would have a lasting positive impact on Yobe State University and the state’s education sector.
The vice-chancellor also praised the governor’s investments in education, citing the provision of infrastructure, staff development programmes, research support, scholarship schemes and other policies aimed at improving the quality of teaching and learning.
He described Buni as a champion of education and healthcare, saying the administration had recorded significant achievements in both sectors through investments in infrastructure, institutional reforms, manpower development and improved service delivery.
According to him, Yobe State University has witnessed significant growth under the present administration through the construction of modern academic facilities, improved learning infrastructure and expanded opportunities for staff development.
Tahir added that implementing the FGN/ASUU agreement would help retain qualified academics, reduce brain drain, encourage innovation and improve the university’s competitiveness among higher institutions in the country.
He assured the governor of the university’s commitment to sustaining excellence in teaching, research, innovation and community service while supporting the state’s vision of developing a globally competitive higher education system.
