Burkina Faso yesterday booked their place in the quarter-finals of the ongoing Africa Cup of Nations as they defeated Gabon 7-6 on penalties after a 1-1 draw in regulation time.

After missing from the spot, Aston Villa striker Bertrand Traore broke the deadlock for Burkina Faso in the 28th minute from a swift counter attack.

However, the Burkinabes hearts were broken when Adama Guira scored an own goal in stoppage time to take the game to extra time.

Although Gabon were later reduced to 10-men after Obissa was sent off following a dangerous challenge on Gustavo Sangare, the Panthers held on to take the match to extra time.

Burkina Faso then triumphed in the resultant penalty shoot-out 7-6.
