A bus on Saturday somersaulted and killed a man, identified as Mr. Dominic Onuigbo, while receiving a phone call by the roadside at Abaji in the FCT.
A witness said the incident happened around 11:23 am when the driver of a Toyota Sienna with registration number AA 337 AG, coming from the Gwagwalada end, lost control after a tire burst.
He said the victim, who was riding on his motorcycle, suddenly parked by the roadside near a U-turn by the General Hospital junction, along the Abaji-Lokoja highway, to receive a phone call when the bus rammed into him.
He said the deceased was immediately rushed to the hospital by officials of the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC), where doctors confirmed him dead.
An FRSC official, who preferred anonymity, confirmed the incident, saying the deceased, who was on his bike, parked by the roadside near the U-turn in order to receive a call when the bus lost control after the tire burst and rammed over him.
He said the victim was rushed to Ayaura Primary Health Centre where he was confirmed dead, adding that his corpse has been deposited at Abaji General Hospital’s morgue.
He said eight passengers, including the bus driver, sustained injuries and were taken to the same health center.
Our reporter learned that the deceased was a tyre dealer in Abaji town and hailed from Ezeagu LGA of Enugu State.
Reacting to the incident, the Chief of the Igbo community in the area, Igweh Damian Ugwu, who also confirmed the incident, said the entire Igbo community in the area had been thrown into mourning.
He said the Igbos were still mourning, even as he said arrangements for his wake-keep are being put in place.
“After the wake-keep, his corpse will be moved to his town in Ezeagu LGA of Enugu State for burial anytime from next week,” he said.
