It is that time of the year that business owners either find it difficult or easy to cope with as a result of the busy schedule.
The economics of Christmas is significant because the season presents a peak selling season for business owners where sales increase dramatically as people purchase gifts, decorations, and supplies, and seek services for the celebration.
Baking
Kabira Shamsu, the CEO of “One Stop Chop”, a bakery and small chops shop in Abuja told Daily Trust that the week before Christmas was overwhelming because of the many orders she got. She said: “In the almost seven months since I started this business, this period is the first time I am having orders beyond 15 at a go.
“And as you know that translates to money. Thank God I have supplied for Christmas, hoping for the New Year. I am so excited for I have made extra cash in this recession,” Kabira added.
Tailoring
A tailor, Maimuna Musa said the sewing business is an all year business considering there are occasional weddings and naming ceremonies but festive periods like Sallah and Christmas are no exceptions.
She said while pressure on work is mostly increased during these periods, it also comes with increased pay. “Even with recession in town, I think people are very particular about how they look because I received so many clothes to sew, I had to decline some others when I realized I might not be able to meet up if I continued collecting,” she said.
Jewellery sales
Susan Jatau sells jewellery using the social media to advertise. Susan said she has made much profit from the sales of jewellery in the season. “I would advertise my jewellery on Instagram, Twitter and Facebook, and because I didn’t get much order in the last quarter of the year I didn’t think to stock for more. “Two weeks to Christmas, I began receiving orders and at a point it was overwhelming because some were ordering for the jewellery I had already sold. I sold all the jewellery; I am just waiting for New Year so I can restock. It has been a wonderful year for my business,” she said.
Hairstyling
Mrs Josephine Ahmed a hair stylist also appreciated the season for the patronage she got this past week. “The customers that visited my salon were more than 50. At a point I was a little worried I may not meet up, but I employed more hands and I made N15,000 more money than I would have in a month,” she said. Experts have said business owners should always try to be creative and use such season to their advantage and should always remember that when entering into the New Year they must plan in advance.
