The Institute of Safety Professionals of Nigeria (ISPON) has warned that businesses will continue to suffer losses if they continue to operate without adherence to safety standards.
President of ISPON, Dr Udezi Stephen, made the disclosure in Abuja on Thursday during a press conference to mark its 11 years anniversary and the coming on board of the ISPON Act 2014.
“Safety is essential for Micro, Small and Medium Enterprises and the earlier they adhere they better. When we say Safety, we mean that if you have a 30,000-litre tanker that you are going to load, don’t load 30,000 litres of diesel or petrol in it. Let there be a room for clearance in that, but you find marketers loading it to the brim, because you want to make more profit.
“This is what we have been preaching and this goes for other sectors including the building sector where we have seen countless cases of collapse. Simple adherence to safety will save businesses a lot as many are losing billions due to non-adherence,” he said.

He further called for integration of safety education in education curriculum from primary school for young Nigerians to be aware of what it takes to keep their businesses and personal properties safe.
