Usman Abubakar who works at the old abattoir, allegedly stabbed his former girlfriend, Bose John, on several parts of her body in the morning of April 19, 2004 after tracing her to the home of her lover, located around the abattoir, a Maiduguri High Court was told last week.

The accused who is charged with culpable homicide punishable with death as provided by Section 221 of the Penal Code pleaded not guilty. “I have not killed any Bose. But I had a girlfriend whose name is Bose. We courted for about three years and when I noticed she was promiscuous, I severed the relationship and started going out with her younger sister. Because I wanted to marry her sister, she had to convert to Islam. When her parents learnt about it, they kicked against it and Bose helped to make sure the marriage intentions never received their parent’s blessings,” he told the court.

Before then, Abubakar had told the police in a statement at the Criminal Investigation Department (CID) that he fought with the deceased and in the process, stabbed and killer her because she was in another relationship even though they planned to get married.

In his testimony, Mohammed Umar Doso, the new lover, on whose bed Bose was slain said, “On April 18, 2004, around 10.55pm, I came home and met Bose in my room. Because it was too late for her to go back home, she slept at my place. The next day, I gave her some money, left her in my room and went to work. Around 10p.m. when I returned back home, I met a crowd in my compound and Ibrahim Dauda Zira, a co-tenant told me that Usman came and stabbed Bose to death with a knife”, Doso’s testimony in court revealed.

Mohammed’s co-tenant, Ibrahim Dauda Zira, told the presiding judge, Justice Abdullahi Sanya Yerima, that he was attracted by music from his neighbour’s room and as he drew closer, he overheard a brawl inside. Later, he saw Usman rush out of the room with a blood stained knife.  He said he tried to challenge Usman but he chased after him with the knife before running away. He added that other people who came to the scene fled too because the knife was stained with blood and they were afraid he could use it to injure them. The case has been adjourned to a later date, which according to the judge, would be communicated to both parties.
