Speaking at the inaugural/formal opening session of the 2014/2015 Legal Year of the state High Court, Ikpi-Itam said 1,427 cases were brought forward from 2012/2013 Legal Year, out of which 1,048 were filed, 1,149 were disposed while 1,326 were still pending.
He further revealed that 424 criminal/appeal cases were brought forward from 2012/2013 Legal Year while 196 were filed during the 2013/2014 Legal Year and 232 were disposed of. He stated that 393 are still pending in the court.
He said, too, that in the motion/miscellaneous category, 328 cases were brought forward from 2012/2013 Legal Year; 49 were filed during the 2013/2014 Legal Year, 585 were disposed, while 232 are still pending.
“The sum total of civil/appeal, criminal/appeal, and motion and miscellaneous cases that were brought forward from 2012/2013 Legal Year are 2,179, the filed cases were 1,733, disposed cases were 1,961, while 1,951 cases are still pending in the state high court,’’ he said.
The Chief Judge said that the 2014/2015 Legal Year would help the state judiciary to assess the successes and challenges of the last legal year because of the forthcoming general elections, adding that it would enable the judiciary to chart the way forward in justice delivery.
