C/River seeks support to boost livestock sector

The Permanent Secretary in the Cross River State Ministry of Agriculture, Rev. Joseph Ogbe, has called for foreign and local support to boost the livestock sector in the state.

Speaking when he received a team of officials from Sasakawa Africa Association (a Japanese agric support group) in his office in Calabar, he said livestock development in the state was low and more needed to be done to revive it.

“We need Sasakawa and other agric entrepreneurs to come in and collaborate and support our livestock sector.  We are currently experiencing low availability in that sector. We need more investment in that area.

“We also want to encourage you to avail our local farmers with modern agriculture technologies to help them boost production.

“Our farmers are ready to imbibe new methodologies and training. We also invite you to key into the massive rice revolution spearheaded by the state governor, Ben Ayade,” he said.

The Country Director, Sasakawa Nigeria, Prof Sani Miko, said; “We want to train more local farmers to gain from agriculture.

“We will do more in Cross River State. We have given more inputs to farmers, and hope they will well utilise them for their benefits.  We have received N84m out of N93m from the federal government. This helped to continue provision of logistics and training for farmers in different states,’’ he said.
