The governing body has already whittled down three names, from an initial list of 25 players, which include favourite Yaya Toure, Pierre Aubameyang and Super Eagles goalkeeper Vincent Enyeama who many believe deserves to become the first goalkeeper to clinch the prize given his heroics for Lille and Nigeria during the course of the year.
Kanu Nwankwo remain the last Nigerian to be named Africa’s best after seeing off challenge from Ghana’s Samuel Kuffour and Cote d’Ivoire’s Ibrahima Bakayoko to emerge victorious in 1999.
According to former Eagles captain Austin Okocha, who tipped Ivorian Yaya Toure of Manchester City (Toure has dominated  for the past three editions )to win it ahead of his compatriot said the City player is on a different level to the rest of the pack
“In my opinion, Yaya Toure is the best African player, he is on course to win the title logically,” said Okocha, who is the head of the Nigeria Football Federation Technical Study Group.
Also former Nigeria international, Garba Lawal has said Cote d’Ivoire player, Toure is worthy to be named 2014 African player of the year.
Lawal said, it will be a miracle to see Vincent Enyeama beat the in-form Elephants’ captain to the honour.
“Though, I won’t be among the voters, I really think the winner should be Yaya Toure.  I’ve been watching him week in week out and his performance tells it all. That is my opinion,” Lawal opined.
“Toure has been in impressive form for Manchester City, but as a Nigerian, I would like to see Enyeama win it but that would be very difficult,” he added.
“We watch Vincent, from time to time but his team Lille has been struggling and also we see Yaya every time on television for his club both in the English Premier League and the UEFA Champions League. This is a big plus for him because his performance(s) can easily be accessed and rated.
“Enyeama have done well in the outgoing year but odds are against him to win it. That is the truth about the whole thing,” he concluded.
