The Center for African Policy Research and Advisory (CAfPRA) has called on President Bola Ahmed Tinubu to prioritise strengthening Nigeria’s border security as a key strategy in combating terrorism across the country.

In a letter addressed to the President following his state visit to the United Kingdom, Dr. Segun Adebayo, Executive Director of CAfPRA, emphasised that terrorism in Nigeria is driven largely by ideological extremism, governance gaps, and porous borders, rather than environmental factors such as climate change.

Adebayo stated: “Terrorism is fundamentally an ideological, governance, and border control problem, not a byproduct of climate change.

“Focusing on climate narratives risks diverting attention from actionable domestic security measures and could invite undue foreign influence.”

The advisory group also warned that attributing insecurity to climate change could lead to policy interventions that undermine national sovereignty.

“Believing climate change caused terrorism may result in adopting measures like lab-grown meat or climate-smart seeds, which could disrupt our agriculture and food systems,” Dr. Adebayo noted.

He urged President Tinubu to review advisors promoting globalist climate narratives and focus on homegrown solutions to insecurity.

“True leadership requires prioritising our people, industries, and local solutions to the challenges we face,” Dr. Adebayo added.

Analysts have consistently highlighted that Nigeria’s terrorism challenges stem from extremist ideologies, weak governance, and uncontrolled borders.

Strengthening border security, they argue, remains one of the most practical ways to prevent the movement of insurgents and criminal networks.

With insecurity continuing to rise in various regions, CAfPRA’s recommendations aim to ensure that Nigeria’s national security strategies are locally informed, practical, and sovereignty-focused.
