A local construction firm, Cakasa Nigeria Ltd, operating from Cross River State is set to present awards to its workers for complying with safety standards at work.
This was disclosed at a news conference in Calabar by the company’s lawyer and project manager, Barrister Onamson Okafor and Engr. Tony Ladi, respectively.
They used the occasion to debunk some allegations by a union called Iron and Steel Senior Staff Association of Nigeria (ISSAN) which accused them of not complying with safety procedures.
The officials disclosed that they have strictly stuck to industrial rules, for which they have received numerous awards for safety compliance.
The lawyer also added that because of their adherence to standards, their workers who have also kept to safety rules of the company, have also been given awards for safety compliance. "Soon we are going to have another elaborate safety award for all the people that have actually worked in compliance with safety requirements. They will be given awards and certificates of recognition.
“We have never gone against any safety rule or practice. As a rule, before you
embark on any work in any construction site, whether with a client or not, you must undergo what we call safety drill first. It is a must and before you go to any site activity for the day, we must make sure that you are properly kitted," he said.
The company described the accusations by the union as baseless and one aimed at tarnishing their public image.
“On the 3 rd of April 2019, ISSAN published a report in some newspapers that Cakasa does not comply with safety procedure on site. One of the allegations is that the company failed to provide personal protective equipment to their men on site.
