Controversy is growing over Tuesday’s election of Rev. Jeremiah Malankaltho Gado as the TEKAN/ECWA block candidate to contest the upcoming election for the president of the Christian Association of Nigeria (CAN).
Daily Trust reports that TEKAN which means the Tarayyar Ekkelesiyoyin Kristi A Nijeria had sent a protest letter to CAN secretariat shortly after the election, asking the apex Christian body to disregard the election of Gado as the block candidate and urging CAN to extend the deadline for the submission of block nominations.
CAN had given a deadline of March 30th for TEKAN/ECWA and the Organisation of Africa Independent Churches (OAIC) which are the two contesting blocks to present their candidates.
The letter which was written by TEKAN General Secretary, Moses Ebuga and made available to Daily Trust said the gathering that produced Rev. Gado who is also the National President of Evangelical Church Winning All (ECWA) was not a block meeting but a gathering of TEKAN members to discuss the abduction of TEKAN President, Rev. Emmanuel Nziggau who was kidnapped almost two weeks ago.
The letter stated that in the course of the meeting, ECWA leaders had arrived the TEKAN headquarters in Jos and insisted on joining the meeting which eventually led to the election.
“I want to officially inform the national secretariat that this meeting was not a block meeting. So, a representation from it is not a block representation. Therefore, the national secretariat should disregard that letter and the person nominated until you hear from the block,” Ebuga said. 
However, the Vice President of TEKAN, Rev. Ayohol Ate who chaired the election yesterday refuted Ebuga’s letter on the basis that the General Secretary did not consult him before writing the letter and that Ebuga had been present during the election and even signed the attendance list without a protest.
