Canonising corrupt leaders, as well as excessive pressure on public officials by members of the society for solutions to individual problems have been identified as the bane militating against holistic war against corruption in Nigeria.
The Superintendent, education group, Independent Corrupt Practices and other related offences Commission, (ICPC), Mal Dalhatu Abdullahi Bangaje stated this on Thursday in Kano in a paper presentation on the ‘roles of citizens and ICPC in the fight against corruption’ at a one day sensitization seminar organised by the Civil Society Legislative Advocacy Centre (CISLAC) for communities in Kano.
He said unrealistic demands placed by individuals on political office holders has made them to derailed from their constitutional responsibilities, and further encourage them to embark on massive looting of public funds at the expense of the overall development of the society.
“Looking at what is happening in Nigeria you will see that society is contributing to the problem of corruption through undue pressure on the public office holders. You can see the way public office holders are having a lot of problems with people coming to them with their personal problems like issues of school fees for their children, medical bills for their families, that issue is really contributing to corruption, inhibitive to anti-graft war” he said.
He urged the people to desist from that habit, understanding that public offices are not meant for money making but service delivery to the whole society.
He further charged Nigerians to always hold public officials to account in the interest of common good.
Attendance at the workshop which was meant to educate the citizens on their roles in fighting corruption was drawn from various civil society organizations, student groups and media organisations in Kano state.
