Captain Shehu Iyal, a former Special Assistant on Aviation Matters to Presidents Olusegun Obasanjo and Goodluck Jonathan, has died after a protracted illness.

A family source in Zaria confirmed that the veteran aviation expert passed away on Thursday.

He has been buried in Zaria according to Islamic rites.

Until his death, Captain Iyal was the Managing Director and Chief Executive Officer of Afri-Air and a prominent figure in Nigeria’s aviation industry.

A 1977 graduate of Ahmadu Bello University (ABU), he was also an alumnus of the Nigeria College of Aviation Technology (NCAT), Zaria.

Born in Zaria, Captain Iyal played a significant role in shaping Nigeria’s aviation policies.

He served as Chairman of the Presidential Implementation and Monitoring Committee for the development of the Nnamdi Azikiwe International Airport and also chaired the Presidential Committee on the Improvement of Airport Security and Drug-Related Issues.

In addition, he was a board member of the National Hajj Commission of Nigeria (NAHCON) and chaired its Aviation Committee, contributing to the planning and coordination of airlifts during Hajj operations.
