Car battery thieves invade Kubwa

Residents of Kubwa in Abuja have decried the high rate of car battery theft in the area, describing it as “worrisome”.

They said more than nine car batteries had been removed from cars parked outside homes in the past five weeks.

Residents who spoke with City & Crime on Tuesday said the areas affected mostly were Pipeline, Byazhin and Byazhin Across.

A recent victim, Uche Emeka, told our reporter that he earlier thought that the reports about car battery theft were just stories until he became a victim yesterday morning.

Emeka said, “On Tuesday morning I was keen to get to the office on time. By the time I was dressed, I stepped out of my apartment and proceeded to my car, but realised the car had been tampered with.

“Upon closer inspection, I discovered the battery in my Toyota had been stolen. I raised alarm. I was shocked when I heard another man yelling that his car had been vandalized and the battery stolen.”

Another victim, Gbenga Babatunde, said, “Last week I was a victim. My two cars were vandalised and their batteries stolen.”

Another resident, Onyeama Joy, said, “We live every passing day in fear. They are repeatedly stealing car batteries almost every day. We do not have sufficient security here.”

A security expert, Dominic Emmanuel, advised that to cut down the risk of having one’s battery stolen, “The first thing to do is to stop parking outside your compound. If you don’t have a fence, build.”
