The FCT Police Command has paraded 24 suspects arrested for various crimes including car snatching, armed robbery and dealing in hard drugs.
The Commissioner of Police, Bala Ciroma, represented by the his deputy (Admin), Rabiu Ladodo, while parading the suspects, said the proactive measures put in place by the command to beef up security and fight crime in the capital city have continued to yield positive results.
Ladodo said the command was able to burst a syndicate of car snatchers in the city after the arrest of one Peter Chukwu in possession of a live cartridge at Games village which led to the arrest of eight other members of the syndicate.
He said aside snatching cars at gunpoint, the gang also specialised in using weapons to rob people of their phones, cash and other valuables.
Other suspected members of the gang are: Peter Chukura, 25; Abdullahi Isiaka, 29; Abu Awal, 26 (receiver); Victor Orji, 27; Muhammed Yahuza, 24; Matthew Awoba, 24; Hamza Mohammed, 23; Patrick Eze, 20 and Julius Peter, 28.
“Other exhibits recovered from the suspects were: one knife, one bullet proof vest containing charms, one iPhone 8 and one Alcatel phone,” he said.
Ladodo also revealed that on September 17, operatives from Lugbe Division, during a raid on a notorious criminal hideout at Tudun Wada Lugbe recovered over 16 bags of dried leaves suspected to be Indian hemp from a warehouse in the area.
“Two suspects, Adamu Jauro Bello,28 years and Sefullah Umar, 20 years were also arrested in the warehouse.
“Other exhibits recovered from the scene were: two daggers, four bottles of codeine syrup, Tramadol tablets, and Valium 5 tablets”, he said, adding that effort had been intensified to arrest the principal suspects who are presently at large.
He added that on September 16, operatives on stop-and-search duty at Shoprite junction Apo arrested one Lawal Adama at the location for being in possession of a locally made single barrel pistol with three rounds of live cartridges.
He also stated that investigation revealed that the suspect was a member of an armed robbery gang.
Ladodo said all the suspects would be arraigned before the court as soon as investigations are concluded.
One of the suspected car snatchers, Peter Chukwu, while speaking with journalists, said he went on car snatching operation with the gang only twice and was given N50,000 for each operation.
He spent the money in drinking, smoking and some clothes, he said, adding that he met the other suspects at a beer parlour and was lured into the group after seeing how they were spending lavishly on drinks.
Another suspect, Peter Chukura, said the gang snatched four vehicles which they sold at prices ranging from N150,000 to N300,000.
