In a release to journalists in Calabar, Father Bassey said that “one goal that throws some challenge is the proposed 5th goal which has to do with achieving gender equality and empowering all women and girls”.
But the Catholic priest was worried that “target 5.6 talks about sexual reproductive rights, which is a euphemism for abortion.
“It would be unfortunate if this becomes part of the global development agenda. As my Harvard Professor in the School of Public Health said, this is the new terminology for abortion and all kinds of contraceptives.”
He lamented that if the UN considers it, people would secure abortion anyway even if there was a law against it.
He stressed that it is not the duty of the world to set it as a development agenda and hoped that this aspect would be expunged.
