The CBC boss said that he was in Nigeria for a business dialogue on the forthcoming Commonwealth Business and Heads of Government Forum which is scheduled to take place in Australia in October later this year and has deemed it appropriate to visit the Director General, National Gallery of Art to work out a modality in promoting Nigerian visual art by making it a side attraction at the event.

According to him, the CBC, which is an umbrella business body responsible for promoting global trade and investment for shared prosperity among the Commonwealth states will highlight the business aspect of the organisation as well as explore how the visual art as an alternative source of revenue generation can play a major role in the forth coming session.

Describing Nigeria as one to have fantastic cultural festivals of art that is rated as number one, Godfrey said the NGA’s involvement will also act as a support to the participation of President Goodluck Ebele Jonathan, who will be delivering a key note address at the event.

Muku, in his response, expressed happiness over the visit and the choice of President Jonathan who is keen at diversifying the country’s economy by looking into other sectors for an improved internally generated income for a better Nigeria. He informed that, the NGA has over three thousand art works in its national collection. He went on to state that the institution is faced with challenges which include space, weather, preservation and essentially the lack of a befitting National Gallery of Art in Abuja.

The DG chipped in that the President has directed that a befitting National Gallery of Art be constructed in Abuja which will help the NGA be more proactive in its statutory responsibilities and their executions.

Frantic efforts through diplomatic collaborations for training of NGA staff in these areas are being made, the NGA boss informed.

The Commonwealth Heads of Government meeting (CHOGOM) holds in Perth, Australia from 28th-30th October, 2011. The Business Forum of CBF will be hosted in conjunction with the Commonwealth Heads of Government Meeting, which has as its Theme:”Partnering for Global Growth: The Commonwealth, Indian Ocean and the Pacific Rim. This event will be declared open by Her Excellency, The honourable Julia Gillard MP, Prime Minister of Australia.
