The Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) has said it will soon roll out financial intervention schemes for tomato farmers in Kano state and all other tomato producing areas in the country.

This, according to the bank, will boost local tomato production, which will discourage tomato paste importation.

Special Adviser to CBN governor on development finance Mr. Anthony Efechikwu, gave the assurance when he led CBN delegation on assessment tour to Dangote tomato processing plant at Kadawa area of the state.

According to him, the team is in Kano to assess and explore possible ways through which the Dangote plant will extend its coverage to more farmers.

He added that CBN has been blocking smuggler’s finances as a measure to encourage tomato value chain in the country.

He also revealed that CBN would work with tomato producing associations in order to map out financial intervention based on what the farmers want.

Earlier,  Managing Director of Dangote tomato processing plant, Malam Abdulkareem Kaita, said though the 1,200tons per day capacity plant has begun work, the production isn’t in full capacity, adding that the company had done a lot in ensuring that tomato farmers within the areas were adequately supported by the company.
