The National Population Commission (NPC) has disclosed plans to identify and map herders and Internally Displaced Persons (IDPs) in the country in a bid to ensure they are captured in the 2023 population and housing census.
The Chairman of NPC, Isa Nasiru Kwarra, who disclosed this Thursday in Abuja said that was to prevent some of the shortcomings of the 2006 census.
Speaking at the opening ceremony of the training of trainers’ workshop for the identification and mapping of special populations, Kwarra said the exercise would enable it to monitor the movement, patterns, and migratory intentions of the groups.
He added that the data to be obtained would aid it to know their community knowledge and preferred sources of information and communication during the census.
On his part, the Statistician General of the federation/CEO of the National Bureau of Statistics (NBS), Mr Semiu Adeniran, said the data would help in broadening the scope of household statistics as they would subsequently be included in surveys.
