The National President of the Qur’anic memorisers, Sheikh Hassan Musa, who made the plea in Abuja, said the best way to end street begging was to empowering the Qur’anic scholar to become self-reliant.
Sheikh Musa, who is also the chairman of the centre, said it is imperative to provide the scholars with business opportunities so as to make them proactive in the development of the society.
“It is dangerous to neglect this group of people as they are also part and parcel of the society.
“The street begging is persistently on the rise in the country because these scholars have not been carried along by the government and they have nothing to do for a living. Until government provides them with businesses, street begging will never be eradicated in the country,” he said.
He said the centre was working round the clock to complement government efforts towards eradicating the tradition of begging by almajirai, adding that “this cannot be achieved without provision of business for the scholars; they have to have something doing for a living because some of the almajirai are begging for the scholars, not for themselves.”
