The National Ear Care Centre (NECC) Kaduna has offered free ear screening and medical care to over 250 residents of Danbushiya community in Kaduna. Residents of the area including women and children thronged the primary health care centre in the community to benefit from the gesture as they also received lecture on how to care for the ear.
Speaking at the venue of the screening, Medical Director of the centre, Dr. Aminu Bakare, told newsmen that it was part of activities to mark this year’s World Hearing Day, adding that the screening was meant for residents in rural communities who lack access to regular medical services.
He said 40 percent of hearing loss in children is attributed to genetic causes, 31 percent to infections including measles and meningitis, among others while 17 percent is due to complications at birth including prematurity, low birth weight and neonatal jaundice.
