The Center for Information Technology and Development (CITAD) has recorded 522 hate speeches on the platform of social media in the month of April, under its monitoring and countering of hate speech scheme.

Addressing newsmen in Kano, CITAD’s Senior Programme Officer Malam Isah Garba said, out of the speeches 250 were related to religion, 201 on ethnicity, 31 on Biafra, seven on politics and elections, two others on resource control and one on terror recruitment.

He added that the statistics was indeed alarming taking into consideration the number of hate speeches recorded on religion and ethnicity as they were the sensitive areas of citizen’s social life.

Malam Garba also stated that hate speeches were issues of concern in virtually all African countries and thereby making it necessary for all partners to come together and address the menace.
