The Centre for Research and Information on Substance Abuse (CRISA), in collaboration with the United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime (UNODC), will hold its 12th Biennial International Conference on “Drugs, Alcohol and Society in Africa” tomorrow.
A statement, signed by Professor Isidore S. Obot, Director and chair, conference planning committee, said the conference would be held in Abuja with the theme “Public Health and Drug Policy in Africa: Beyond the General Assembly Session on the World Drug Problem”.
Participants will include researchers from Nigeria and several other countries, policy makers, representatives of civil society organizations, journalists and students. Fifty-two papers are expected to be presented while discussions would be held on various aspects of drug policy in African countries, including the issue of data availability, legal and law enforcement matters, lack of treatment opportunities, and the outcome of the UN General Assembly meeting in April.
According to the statement, the series began in Jos in 1991 and has been held in Abuja and Lagos every two years, with scholars from more than 30 countries, since its inception.
“The keynote speaker for this year’s conference is Hanna Heikkilä,” the statement said.
