According to information from the Egypt Embassy in Nigeria, the museum which was built since 1870 has been seriously affected.
In Dar el-kutub behind the museum, eight manuscripts were destroyed and several others damaged while the remaining ones are currently being transferred to a safe place, Minister Mohammed Ibrahim says. Quoting Minister of Antiquities of Egypt, Mohamed Ibrahim, the embassy said out of 1,471 artifacts, 47 were destroyed while 26 will be perched together and 64 will be restored.
“The museum has a total of 92,000 artifacts and 1,471 on display and most of the damaged artifacts were those made of glass, wood and ceramics. Out of 126 glass artifacts, 42 were smashed, 12 were damaged but restorable and 72 were unaffected. Out of 363 ceramics, 10 were destroyed, 51 were damaged and 301 were unaffected. And out of 178 wood artifacts, 18 were destroyed and 160 were unaffected,” the embassy said.
Meanwhile, other collections of artifacts such as 11 weapons, 18 manuscripts, 16 rugs and 67 ivory artifacts were left undamaged adding that the only piece missing is one gold coin, with many of the smaller artifacts spread around the museum in the aftermath of the explosion currently being collected.
