So, the issue and relevance of certificates in contemporary political campaigns and space only undermine the capacity of the ruling party and its candidate, who is battling with questions that Nigerians are asking. Like what they have done in the six years that they have held power, and what they can do if given another opportunity.
The questions are various, but some are: What have they done with the power that they have held? Have they provided basic social amenities such as education and healthcare? Have they managed our economy well? These are some of the questions that the PDP is running away from. Instead, they are talking about the school certificates of a retired general in the Nigerian Army. A candidate who is contesting for the office of the president of Nigeria for the fourth time, no less.
What the animosity has succeeded in underscoring is that it this clear that he stands a better chance than now. This is amplified by the huge failure of the ruling party and the incapacity to deliver dividends by the president, who is said to hold a PhD in Philosophy.
Is it possible that General Buhari would have risen to the level he has without going through school? I think the tactic being deployed by the PDP is a weak one and merely an expression of the deep frustration and confusion that it is in. clearly, there is no tangible benefit that Nigerians can see, so they choose to chase shadows and I am glad that Nigerians are in the know this time.
Nigerians are prepared to change this government. The popularity of a candidate that was severally vilified by political hawks in the past, is surging across the landscape. The trick they used in bringing religion into it is falling like pack of cards. Muslims and Christians alike are saying ‘no’ to the manipulation of religion in the nation’s political process. The failures of this government are obvious and they are affecting both Christians and Muslims, from the North and from the South.
I’m not sure if those who want to make political capital out of Buhari’s certificate are aware of the fact that Nigerians have made up their minds and the word in February is change. The earlier they face Nigerians and tell us how they managed our resources in the last six years, the better. The earlier they begin to prepare their books for handing over, the better. Whether General Buhari went to school or not, that is not the issue now. The issue is that the government has failed and Nigerians are ready for change.
Nigeria is greater than every of its citizens. Let the campaign be based upon issues. What has been done and what ought to be done. The issue of school certificate is a diversion, one certainly not needed, as the train has since left the station. God bless Nigeria.
