Cycling Federation of Nigeria (CFN) has urged Nigeria’s cyclists to prioritise safety on highways.
Bashir Mohammed, the Technical Director of CFN, said this in an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in Abuja on Monday.
He expressed concern over cyclists riding on the airport road without proper security escorts from the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) or other security agencies.
According to him, riding on the highway poses risks to both individual and group cyclists, including those of varying ages.

He said that safety ought to be the top concern for all cyclists, especially those riding on major roads.
“The risks faced by cyclists, particularly those riding without security escorts on major roads like the airport road and other suburbs, are numerous.
“The safety of cyclists is paramount, and the CFN always advises cyclists to prioritise their safety,” he said.
According to Bashir, any cyclist riding on the highway should be accompanied by an FRSC vehicle and signs to alert other road users, especially when turning.
“The CFN provides security for cyclists during organised rides and events, ensuring their safety on the road.
“State Cycling Associations and affiliated clubs are expected to adhere to CFN’s bye-laws, which emphasise the importance of providing security for cyclists during rides,” he said.
Bashir said that in many countries, safety regulations and guidelines were in place to protect cyclists and promote safe cycling practices.
He said cyclists were often required to wear helmets, use designated bike lanes, and follow traffic rules to minimise the risk of accidents.(NAN)
