The Chairman of the House of Representatives Committee on Sports, Hon. Ekene Adams Abubakar, has congratulated the women’s national basketball team D’Tigress on their recent victory at the Afrobasket championship in Kigali, Rwanda.

The girls coached by Rena Wakama were crowned champions of Africa for the 4th consecutive time when they defeated Senegal 84- 74 last Saturday in Kigali.

While commending the team, Abubakar said “Congratulations to our girls for winning the Afrobasket Championship. They are the true champions of Africa.

“This victory is heartwarming and an indication that given the necessary support, they can rule the world.  They have shown that with hard work, commitment and team work, everything is possible.

“We are indeed proud of the team and we will continue to give them the necessary support. Their performance should spur the Falcons to victory against England.”

He also said players’ welfare must be given priority attention so that they can be motivated to make the country proud.

“We shall continue to give the needed support to all sports so that Nigerian athletes can attain their potential.  If our athletes are properly trained, motivated and encouraged, they can compete favourably against the best teams in the world. We will encourage every sports and not just football because Nigeria is a great sporting nation”

Meanwhile, Abubakar has called on all stakeholders to embrace peace which will encourage corporate sponsors to invest in sports.

“Sports can only thrive where there is peace among all stakeholders. No investor will bring his money where there is crisis,” he said.
