It is my candid opinion that the essay which was meant to commemorate a deceased comrade (Auwal Shanono, may Allah rest his soul) only ended up insulting his memory. Shanono was highly respected for his proven integrity. When he says he would do something he does it. This practical demonstration of administrative incompetence has also eroded the little confidence the members had for the association’s leadership. How would any medical student have the assurance to participate in any such competition in the future if organized by succeeding administrations?
May I conclude by enlightening the NiMSA executive council this way: the next time you decide to cook up a story to seduce an NGO or any potential donor into giving you funds please leave essay competition out of it. Do not go distracting innocent medical students who have chosen to occupy themselves with intellectually fulfilling endeavours against joining your league of bootlickers. Writing is a noble, time-honoured art and a serious business not a vocation for charlatans; and administration is not about cheap lies and deception but living up to assumed statutory responsibilities. Like all your contemporaries in the political brothel called Nigerian student unionism you seem to adore our elders in government, the Medical and Dental Council of Nigeria (MDCN) and the Nigerian Medical Association (NMA) worshiping them as mentors obviously oblivious of the fact that youths as the arrowhead of sociopolitical reformation must foster the exalted principles they neglected. NiMSA should be a pressure group committed to health and educational reforms not tireless sycophancy amid glaring incompetence. You truly want to know why the MDGs envisioned are ever remote and elusive to the country? You do not have to look beyond your noses. There you have the answer by your crooked style of governance. Countries that have attained significant mileage in the pursuit of the MDGs have leaders that do not engage in implementing white elephant projects, paying lip service to their people, raising their expectations and sending them on a ruse to leave them full of disappointments at the end of the day. As long as Nigeria remains heavily infested by dishonest mediocres its aspirations towards the MDGs would always be analogous to chasing a mirage.
