Character commission seeks fair representation in policemen recruitment
Acting Chairman of the Federal Character Commission (FCC) Alhaji Muhammadu Bello Alkali has said the federal character principle must be strictly adhered too in the recruitment of the 10, 000 police officers recently ordered by president Muhanmmadu Buhari.
A statement by the commission’s spokesman Comrade Bunmi Ojo quoted as saying that the directive of the President to recruit more personnel was commendable but that as preparation for the recruitment is going on, the commission wants the body responsible for the exercise to adhere to the provision of the constitution in section 14 subsections 3.
The principle provides that all constituent states of the federation be given fair representation to fill job vacancies in government ministries and agencies.
President Buhari had earlier announced that 10, 000 additional police personnel would be recruited and the CCTV Monitoring System would be installed across major cities and towns in Nigeria to further strengthen the security of the public space.
The FCC boss further explained that the reason behind the constitutional provision of federal character was too "promote national unity, foster national loyalty and give every citizen of Nigeria a sense of belonging to the nation notwithstanding the diversities of ethnic origin, culture, language or religion which may exist."
He noted that adhering to the "federal character principle will ensure that that the good intention of Mr. President is complemented."
