Chevron Nigeria Limited and its partners in the Agbami oil field are set to boost the capacity of farmers in Katsina State with the handover of a modern Agro-Based Economic Empowerment Development Project.
The agro-based project involved the provision of Storage and Vegetable Preservation Processing Centre located at Ajiwa Community in Batagrawa, Local Government of Katsina State.
The project was funded by Star Deepwater Petroleum Nigeria Limited, a Chevron company and Co-venturers in the Agbami oil field project.
The Agbami field is Nigeria’s largest deepwater project operated by co-venturers comprising the Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation (NNPC), Famfa Oil Limited, Statoil Nigeria Limited and Petroleo Brasileiro Nigeria Limited (Petrobras)
Presenting the project to a cross-section of the farmers on behalf of the Agbami field partners recently, the Director, Deepwater and Production Sharing Contracts at Star Deepwater Petroleum Limited, Mr. Jeffrey Ewing, said the project is also intended to improve the farmers’ capacities on modern irrigation techniques and business skills for entrepreneurial development.
Represented by Mr. Sam Otuonye, Ewing said though the Agbami Field is located approximately 70 miles (113 kilometers) offshore Nigeria, the co-venturers view the entire country as the Agbami community.
Other Agbami co-venturers who funded the project expressed belief that investments should not just be in producing crude oil but also people.
Famfa Oil Managing Director Mrs. Modupe Alakija, represented by Femi Adejumo, said the firm is proud to be associated with the project which will be useful beyond Katsina State.
Some farmers who spoke about the centre said the project was long overdue in the community, pledging to make the best use of the facility.
