Chevron Nigeria Limited and its partners in the Agbami oil field have handed over a science laboratory complex, worth millions naira, to Government College, Makurdi, Benue State.
The state-of-the-art science laboratory was funded by Star Deepwater Petroleum Nigeria Limited, a Chevron company, and Co-venturers in the Agbami oil field project.
The science laboratory complex was made up of laboratories for physics, biology and chemistry equipped with modern apparatus and reagents to ensure conducive teaching and learning.
It was presented to the Benue State Governor Dr. Samuel Ortom at a ceremony held in Abuja, recently.
Presenting the keys to the complex on behalf of the Agbami field partners, the Director, Deepwater and Production Sharing Contracts at Star Deepwater Petroleum Limited, Mr. Jeffrey Ewing, said the donation was a demonstration of the company’s determination to improve education system in Nigeria.
Represented by Mr. Sam Otuonye, Ewing said even though the Agbami field was located approximately 70 miles (113 kilometres) offshore Nigeria, the co-venturers viewed the entire country as the Agbami community.
“We have built and donated 24 fully equipped, modern science laboratory complexes and also trained laboratory technologists and science teachers to run these facilities across Nigeria,” he said.
Other Agbami co-venturers who funded the projects expressed optimism that the laboratories would help raise the standard of education in the state and beyond.
Receiving the lab on behalf of the Benue State governor, the permanent secretary of the state’s ministry of education Mr. John Weor, appealed to the oil firms to spread their intervention projects to poverty reduction and employment for youths.
