This year’s Day of the African Child focussed on conflicts affecting millions of children and depriving them education, but the Centre for Family Health Initiative says the place of children in helping correct imbalances and restore peace is crucial.
“We want to awaken their senses of their rights and responsibilities,” said the centre’s director Princes Osita-Oleribe. The centre organised a special party for children from some 17 schools around Abuja.
“It is important for them to know what they have rights to, but we want them to know that in their own capacities, they can broker peace among themselves, within families, among neighbours, in schools,” Osita-Oleribe said.
“We don’t want them to be the generation that will come up and fail generations yet to come. We want them to be the difference. We don’t want them to be the men who will be on the battle field, killing people whereas the true victims of the wars are the women and children who are not on the battle front,” she added.
