Prominent businessman and former deputy governorship candidate of the Young Progressives Party (YPP) in Abia State, Dr. Chima Desmond Anyaso, has called on President Bola Ahmed Tinubu to consider exercising his constitutional powers to grant a presidential pardon to the leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), Mazi Nnamdi Kanu.

Dr. Anyaso made the appeal in a statement released from his country home in Igbere, Bende Local Government Area of Abia State, saying Thursday’s court ruling had created an opportunity for what he described as “a decisive political solution.”

He explained that he had previously avoided public commentary on Kanu’s case to allow the judiciary to handle the matter without external pressure. However, with the latest verdict delivered—though still subject to further legal processes—he believes the time is appropriate for the President to intervene.

“Now that the courts have spoken and the judicial process has advanced to a point where executive discretion may be applied, I respectfully call on President Tinubu to grant a presidential pardon to Mazi Nnamdi Kanu,” he said.

Anyaso said he views such an action as a step that could strengthen national unity and promote reconciliation.

He added that various groups and individuals across the country—including traditional rulers, political leaders, business associations, civil society organisations, and religious bodies—have, at different times, called for a political pathway to resolving the matter.

According to him, a presidential pardon could help ease tensions and contribute to broader peace efforts.

“Nigeria stands at a defining moment. We need unity, healing, and a renewed sense of collective responsibility,” he said.

He further urged all stakeholders to prioritise dialogue, cohesion, and constructive engagement in addressing national challenges.
