Mr YU Dunhai, Ambassador of the People’s Republic of China to Nigeria, has disclosed that his country is supporting Nigeria to become a member of the G20.

He disclosed this while speaking at the first Annual China-Nigeria Government Exchange Program Alumni Reunion Gala in Abuja on Thursday night.

He said, “China wants to support Nigeria to be a member of the G20 because Nigeria has over 220 million people.”

While declaring that China supports Nigeria to play a big role in regional and international affairs, the envoy added that, “Nigeria has become a partner country of the BRICS this year, and Nigeria also became a member of the International Maritime Organisation, returning after 40 years, and China supports that.”

Dunhai acknowledged that Nigeria has always supported China, citing Nigeria’s upholding of the One-China principle, which states that Taiwan is part of China.

Speaking about the purpose of the gathering, the envoy said it was to provide a platform for alumni who have attended the Chinese government exchange programmes to stay connected, exchange ideas and contribute to China-Nigeria relations.

He disclosed that, “Over the years, China has provided over 10,000 opportunities for training programmes for Nigerian people.

“It covers a wide range of topics from experience of governance, to poverty reduction, manufacturing, agriculture, public health, trade, investment, science, technology, innovation, rural economy, and digital economy, among others.”

He said the programmes have not only helped to enhance the capabilities of the individuals but also contributed to the economic development of Nigeria.

The Ambassador said China is providing the training for Nigerians because China and Nigeria are natural partners, saying their bilateral relations are over half a century old.
