At least 13 people have died and 236 others hospitalised following a cholera outbreak in six local government areas (LGAs) of Niger State.
The affected local government areas include Wushishi, Shiroro, Chanchaga, Bosso, Magama, and Bida.
In Zungeru, a historic town in Wushishi LGA, the president of Zungeru Youth Development Association, Idris Abubakar, confirmed to our correspondent that several lives had been lost, and many residents were currently receiving treatment.
He said the outbreak was confirmed at the Federal Medical Centre Zungeru, and called for urgent intervention from the state government.

The Niger State Commissioner for Primary Healthcare, Dr. Ibrahim Ahmed Dangana, said the government has established treatment and isolation centres in each of the affected LGAs to contain the outbreak.
“We have set up treatment and isolation centres and are also conducting aggressive sensitisation campaigns. Our outreach now targets religious institutions and all eight emirates across the state,” he said.
Dr. Dangana commended Governor Mohammed Umar Bago for his swift response and appreciated donor agencies for their support.
The Director of Public Health in the Ministry of Tertiary Health, Dr. Ibrahim Idris, added that Chanchaga, Bosso, and Shiroro LGAs were the worst affected.
