Five persons have been killed and 11 others hospitalised following cholera outbreak in Mangu Local Government Area of Plateau State.
The Commissioner for Health, Dr Nicholas Baamlong, disclosed this on Sunday in Jos, saying 52 suspected cases were reported.
He said the confirmed and suspected cases were recorded in Pushit, Mangu I and Mangu II communities.
According to the commissioner, the state Ministry of Health had intensified public health interventions to contain the outbreak, prevent further spread, and reduce its impact on affected communities.

He said the government had deployed additional Rapid Response Teams (RRTs) to affected wards, expanded treatment centres and isolation capacity, and carried out emergency procurement of Rapid Diagnostic Test kits, intravenous fluids, and essential medicines.
Baamlong also said an Incident Management System (IMS) had been activated to coordinate a comprehensive multi-sectoral response to the outbreak.
“The activation of the IMS ensures a coordinated, efficient, and accountable response structure in line with national and international emergency response frameworks,” he said.
He explained that cholera is an acute diarrhea disease caused by ingestion of food or water contaminated with the bacterium Vibrio cholera.
The commissioner urged residents of Mangu LGA and neighbouring communities to take preventive measures, including drinking safe water, maintaining proper hand hygiene, avoiding open defecation, and ensuring proper waste disposal.
He also advised prompt reporting of suspected cases to the nearest health facility for immediate treatment.
Baamlong reaffirmed the state government’s commitment to safeguarding public health, calling on development partners and stakeholders to support ongoing response efforts.
Borno is currently battling Cholera outbreak that has led to loss of lives.
