Would you say a career in Choreography is worth-wile in Nigeria?
Kaffy: I can authoritatively tell you that in the next five years you will see students deciding they want to study Choreography in school and parents would not be afraid for the security or future of that child. There are other things that come with being a choreographer that people do not know or understand. The job requires creative directing, which at an event or show, can be paid for.
I have been hired for the MAMA Awards and even for something as small as an office end-of-year party. Every event needs someone to be behind the stage to coordinate everything that happens onstage, not just the dance but everything else.
So Choreography is wider than most people think?
Kaffy: Yes. A choreographer needs to understand production to the core. This just explains that it is a very wide field and not just about dancing. I can be working for over years and you will not see me on stage but I am still choreographing. This job is an all-encompassing job. I also do physical training asides dancing and all that. It all about health and I do that every time I have a chance.
We heard you’re planning a world tour. True?
Kaffy: The idea is all about packaging the whole dance thing as a brand to the world. The world sold us the dance craze called Zumba, and the western world keeps bringing things and we buy. What are we branding as ours and taking to them to buy? That is why I started selling ‘Ijoda’ as our Nigerian dance workout. It takes the rhythm and adventure of the African movement and brings it to the workout stage.
