The Innercity Mission for Children of Christ Embassy Abuja Ministry Centre has donated a maternal and child healthcare centre to Waru and its surrounding communities in the Federal Capital Territory (FCT).
The new facility is a 10-bed ward and has state-of-the-art delivery room and life-saving equipment. It also has a doctors’ lodge to enable posting of resident doctors to the centre.
Speaking during the handing over ceremony of the centre in Abuja, the Pastor of Christ Embassy Abuja Ministry Centre, Rev. Tom Amenkhienan, said the donation was borne out of Pastor Chris Oyakhilome’s passion for indigent children and to protect and give them hope.
Rev. Amenkhienan said the church had been deeply moved by the absence of critical infrastructure and basic amenities in Waru, chief among which was the absence of an adequate and functional primary healthcare centre.
He said the donated facility, a maternal and paediatric health centre wing of the Waru Primary Health Centre, was designed to meet several pressing needs and inadequacies observed in the primary health centre in the course of visits and interaction with patients and staff of the centre.
Rev. Amenkhienan said, “When we saw firsthand the condition of the delivery room and maternity ward, it brought tears to our eyes and we moved to take action to ensure that no child should come into the world in such an environment. The facilities were in an extreme state of disrepair and the very dedicated staff and volunteers at the centre were forced to improvise just to save lives and deliver expectant mothers safely to the best of their abilities.
“They told us sad stories of late night deliveries, for which because there was no power supply to the health centre, they had to depend on the lights of their mobile phones.
“When they had more than one patient in labour, some of them would have to be placed on the floor due to the shortage of beds.”
He explained that Innercity Mission for Children was an arm of the Chris Oyakhilome Foundation International which was making impact in the lives of millions around the world, and added that Pastor Oyakhilome defined success as “looking out for a human in need and reaching out to meet that need.”
The District Head of Waru, Ibrahim Sariki, thanked the mission for the gesture, saying it would alleviate the suffering of women and children in the community and its environs.
