The President of the Calabar Stake of Zion, an arm of the church, Victor Bassey who flagged-off the exercise, said every year the church comes out with a programme in West Africa to help keep the environment conducive for human habitation and to encourage people to emphasis on sanitation.
The State Public Affairs Director, Mrs. Franca Arong Odock, said churches and other religious organizations in the country should not only emphasize spiritual things and the gospel but practical aspects like cleanliness, should also be emphasised by all.
“If these things are not done and we kept on talking about spiritual, it is not just spiritual that people depend on. The spiritual has to be back-up with physical assistance and it is a friendship kind of programme”, she said.
They disclosed that the environmental programme has been on since the past five years and that the administration of Governor Donald Duke who himself emphasised on environmental sanitation and beautification, awarded them prize.
Members of the church were seen in many parts of the Calabar metropolis planting trees and cleaning up the neighbourhood.
