The Chief Justice of Nigeria (CJN), Walter Nkanu Onnoghen and a former Attorney General of the Federation (AGF), Chief Bayo Ojo have been lined up to headline the 2018 Chartered Institute of Arbitrators UK (CIArb) conference in Abuja.

The conference scheduled to commence on Thursday is themed “Arbitration and ADR in Africa: Challenges, Gains and Lessons for the Future.”

The Chairman of CIArb Nigeria branch, Mrs. Adedoyin Rhodes-Vivour at a pre-conference press briefing today said the CJN would in a frank and interactive discussion to be moderated by Ojo, share his thoughts on judicial policy towards arbitration and Alternative Dispute Resolution (ADR), delays in the enforcement of arbitral awards and reforms to the civil justice system in supporting arbitration and ADR.

She said the audience, which would be made up of over 600 experts and participants drawn from various nations of the world, will have an opportunity to listen to personal insights from the CJN on some key issues facing arbitration and ADR.

On other sessions during the conference, the Chairman of the Conference Planning Committee, Sola Ephraim Oluwanaga said, “The African arbitration landscape has been a hive of activity in recent times. Given the pace of foreign investment on the continent, the demand for international arbitration is expected to rise.

“This panel will feature a roundtable discussion of landmark cases, policy changes and legislative developments from around Africa; the roles of arbitral institutions and their impact on Arbitration.

“Panelists will also give their opinion of the most pressing issues participants face in today’s rapidly evolving African arbitration landscape. The audience will also have an opportunity to table “hot topics” for discussion.”

He added that the panelists will share insights from recent data on the experience of Africans in international arbitration and will discuss ideas to increase the representation of African Arbitrators on the international stage.
