Hon. Philip Agbese, Deputy Spokesperson of the House of Representatives, has dismissed allegations linking former Chief of Army Staff, Lt-General Tukur Yusuf Buratai (rtd), to terrorism financing, describing them as “baseless and politically motivated.”

Speaking to journalists in Abuja on Monday, Agbese said the allegations were an attempt to discredit Buratai’s contributions to national security.

“It is important for Nigerians to understand that such claims do not align with the record of service of Lt-General Buratai, who led major operations against insurgent groups during his tenure,” he said.

According to Agbese, Buratai’s period as Chief of Army Staff coincided with significant military efforts to counter violent groups in the North-East.

“Before he became Army Chief, Boko Haram had carried out multiple attacks in Abuja and controlled areas in Borno, Yobe and Adamawa. His tenure saw coordinated military operations that reclaimed territories and created conditions for displaced persons to return,” Agbese said.

He noted that Buratai’s leadership also involved intelligence-driven strategies and strengthened cooperation between the military and civilian populations.

“To link a man who oversaw key security operations to financing terrorism is inconsistent with available records. His service reflects commitment and professionalism,” he added.

Agbese further cautioned that circulating unverified allegations against individuals in the security sector could undermine public confidence.

“Attacking the reputation of those who have served in critical security roles can weaken trust in our institutions. Nigerians must be careful not to allow unsubstantiated claims to distort the facts,” he said.
