Cleric urges medical practitioners to treat patients with compassion

Islamic cleric, Malam Umar Aliyu Nyanda has urged medical practitioners to be more compassionate towards patients.

The deputy Imam of Banex Mosque Wuse 2, Abuja gave the advice at the Ramadan Lecture organised by Islamic Medical Association of Nigeria (IMAN), FCT Chapter in Abuja themed “The Significance of Ramadan in the life of a Muslim”. The cleric, who said being compassionate is one of the ethics of the medical profession, expressed dismay over the unpleasant attitude of some practitioners towards patients.

Malam Nyanda urged the Muslim ummah to maximize the benefits of the holy month, saying no one can guarantee if he/she will witness the next Ramadan. “Engage yourselves more in reading the Qur’an and praising the Almighty Allah to achieve the purpose of Ramadan,” the cleric advised Muslims.

Meanwhile, IMAN chairman in FCT, Dr Suleiman Ahmed pleaded with the Joint Health Sector Unions (JOHESU) to end the on-going indefinite nationwide strike in the spirit of Ramadan. He said JOHESU members, in this period of Ramadan, should be more compassionate to patients who were bearing the brunt of their strike action.

“JOHESU should reconsider and call off the strike for the sake of Ramadan so that patients brought to the hospitals would be attended to,” he said. The Chairman, hospital monitoring committee on FCT hospitals, Dr. Abdullahi Muhammad, said some JOHESU members have been expressing concerns that they were not rendering their services to humanity in the month of Ramadan.

“We are appealing to them, for the benefit of Ramadan, they should think of humanity because there is no work that can be done effectively without members of JOHESU,” he added.
