Clerics urge US to reverse Jerusalem announcement

Muslim clerics have urged the United States government to reverse the December 6 announcement by President Donald Trump, declaring Jerusalem as the capital of Israel as well as its decision to move the US embassy from Tel Aviv to Jerusalem.

Speaking at a press conference in Lagos on Tuesday, the founder of Fath-ul-Qareeb organisation, Shaykh Sulaiman Adangba said Trump’s declaration came at a time when the whole of the Middle East is embroiled in violence which has resulted into loss of lives, adding that it could further lead to greater chaos if not reversed.

"The U.S President should reverse the declaration and return to the status quo to avert chaos," Adangba said.

At the event, which had many Islamic organisations in attendance, Adangba insisted the reversal is necessary for the US not to undermine the United Nations resolutions, particularly resolution 476 and 478 of 1980 when the United States is a member of the exclusive five permanent members of the Security Council.

The grand mufti of Conference of Islamic Organisation (CIO), Ustaz Dhikrullah Shafi, said that both Israel and the USA should be held responsible for the death of nine Palestinians and over 1,900 injured since that announcement by President Trump.

Shafi further said, "The vetoing by the United States of the Egyptian-draft resolution against Mr Trump’s action on Monday, December 18, of the U.N security Council vote where 14 voted for the draft resolution but America alone vetoed it, clearly shows the injustice in the U.N. justice system. Is democracy no more relevant as a single nation’s vote renders ineffective that of 14 U.N. Security Council and 193 General Assembly members?"
