Kano State Governor, Abba Kabir Yusuf, on Sunday, launched the 2025 five-million-tree planting campaign at the Yanbawa Shelterbelt in Makoda Local Government Area.

The initiative is aimed at addressing climate change, restoring degraded lands, and promoting environmental sustainability.

During the launch, Governor Yusuf said his administration is committed to building a greener and more climate-resilient Kano.

He said the revival of the long-abandoned shelterbelt, originally established in 1972, was part of Kano’s agro-climatic strategy.

“For many years, this shelter stood as one of Kano’s sacred defences against environmental degradation. Sadly, it was neglected. But we revived and restored it as part of our agro-climatic response to semi-arid challenges,” he said.

The governor noted that the campaign builds on prior initiatives, including the rehabilitation of government nurseries in Garun Malam and Kafinciri, now supplying thousands of seedlings for afforestation across all 44 local government areas.

So far, over 200,000 hectares of degraded land have been restored, and a 100-hectare orchard for individual farmers has been established as a model for agroforestry-based rural livelihoods, he said.
